Triangle Youth Philharmonic Woodwind Quintet
The Triangle Youth Philharmonic Wind Quintet performs repertoire for clarinet, flute, horn, oboe, and bassoon. Our wind quintet has a long history of excellence and success and traveled to Cary’s Sister City, Le Touquet, France in 2014. The quintet’s coach is Mary Boone, Assistant Principal Flute with the North Carolina Symphony. The group was featured on Cary’s Marvelous Music Family Series Concert in a premiere of The Wolf and the Seven Little Kids composed by R. Michael Daugherty. They perform Discovery Concerts to help fulfill the Mission of the Philharmonic Association.
Mary Boone, Chamber Woodwinds Coach
TYP Wind Quintet Coach, Mary E. Boone, is currently the assistant principal flute with the North Carolina Symphony and has appeared as a soloist with them, as well as the South Carolina Chamber Orchestra and Augusta Symphony. Formerly principal flute with the Augusta Symphony, Boone has also performed with the Columbia Philharmonic, Tanglewood Festival, Waterloo Festival, Bowdoin Summer Music Festival in Maine and Bellingham Festival in Washington.
She received her master’s degree in music and an artist diploma from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she studied with Jeffrey Khaner. First-prize winner of both the Music Teachers National Association Wurlitzer Competition and the Gertrude Seiberling Prize of the Tuesday Musical Club in Ohio, Boone remains an active recitalist and teacher. She has taught at the South Carolina Governor’s School of the Arts, Cleveland Preparatory Department, North Carolina Governor’s School and St. Augustine’s College. She currently teaches flute at North Carolina State University. She has been the TYP Wind Quintet coach since 2008.
