Registration for Non-Auditioned Ensembles 2022

Our three non-auditioned ensembles include the Triangle Youth String Sinfonia (grades 7-12 only), the Triangle Youth String Orchestra, and the Triangle Youth Jazz Lab.   Please see below for information about our non-auditioned ensembles.

About Our Non-Auditioned Ensembles

The Philharmonic Association offers three different non-auditioned ensembles.  We offer two levels of string orchestra for violin, viola, cello and bass musicians and one level of jazz ensemble.

  • The Triangle Youth String Orchestra provides an encouraging atmosphere for young string players, grade 4 and above, to learn ensemble skills. Members should be able to read music and have prior experience, such as private lessons or school orchestra.
  • The Triangle Youth String Sinfonia is open to musicians in grades 7 – 12 who are able to perform the Sinfonia Skill Sheets at a proficient level.
  • The Triangle Youth Jazz Lab provides beginning jazz ensemble training for musicians 4th grade and above with the goal of eventual transition to the Triangle Youth Jazz Band or Triangle Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Important Non-Auditioned Information

Sinfonia Proficiency Check:

There is no formal audition for Sinfonia, but new members must perform a scale and the Sinfonia Skill Sheet for their instrument at a proficient level to demonstrate readiness for the ensemble. Directors will be in touch with members to schedule a meeting and decide seating before the first rehearsal.

TYSO Meet the Conductor:

All musicians 4th grade and above who can read music are accepted into TYSO.  There is no audition, but the ability to read music is necessary.  In order to become acquainted with each participant’s playing and provide the best possible experience in the orchestra, conductor Myriah Luke would like to hear each participant perform one line of a solo prior to the first rehearsal.

TYJL Meet the Conductor:

The Triangle Youth Jazz Lab is a non-auditioned ensemble, but the ability to read music is necessary.  Musicians will be selected based on experience, desire to participate, family support for participation, and our big-band jazz ensemble instrumentation needs.
