Formal Audition Required for Participation

School Term Full Orchestras

Membership in the Triangle Youth Philharmonic (TYP), Triangle Youth Symphony (TYS), and Triangle Youth Orchestra (TYO) is by annual auditions held in late August for the upcoming season. Each musician, whether new or returning, must audition each year.  Philharmonic Association full orchestra membership is open to any musician in the fourth grade through high school. For guidance on how to prepare to have a great audition, also see: “How To Audition” by Artistic Director Emeritus, Hugh Partridge. Learn more.

Summer Jazz Ensembles

Non-Auditioned Groups

The Philharmonic Association recognizes that requiring an audition for participation can be a barrier for some musicians. We offer groups in each of our music genres, classical and jazz, that do not require an audition.

Triangle Youth String Orchestra

The Triangle Youth String Orchestra provides an encouraging atmosphere for young string players, grade 4 and above, to learn ensemble skills. Members should be able to read music and have prior experience, such as private lessons or school orchestra. There is no audition to participate, however students wishing to play in the first violin section or be section leader may elect to play an informal assessment that includes a scale, one minute piece of your choice and sight-reading. A summer session for the Triangle Youth String Orchestra is also offered.

Triangle Youth String Sinfonia

The Triangle Youth String Sinfonia is a continuing string orchestra for students in 7th grade and above. To determine whether participation is beneficial, new students will play the Sinfonia Skill Sheet for their instrument during an informal assessment by the conductor. Registration Link.

Triangle Youth Jazz Lab

The Triangle Youth Jazz Lab offers training in jazz styles with an emphasis on improvisation skills to musicians, 5th grade and above, who play saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, drums, and piano. There is no audition to participate. Registration Link
