Position: Executive Director
Reports to: PA Board of Directors
Job Type: Full-time, 40+ hours per week
Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience

POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the PA Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have responsibility for implementing the organization’s strategic goals, fundraising initiatives, developing and administrating program activities, leading the day-to-day administrative functions, and ensuring that staff and volunteers are in place to meet operational needs. The candidate must be extremely organized and creative to continue the Philharmonic Association’s position as a highly regarded musical arts organization. The Executive Director will support our established culture of professional musical education and ensemble experiences for young musicians.

The Executive Director should create and enhance connections with a variety of constituents, including parents, students, community members, donors, leaders of other artistic/cultural organizations, and others with a vested interest in youth music education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage the day-to-day operations.
Work closely with the Board and staff to achieve the PA’s mission and lead in the execution of strategies outlined in strategic plan.
Develop Board membership supporting the strategic plan with a small paid staff.
Work closely with the Treasurer, overseeing the organization’s finances to ensure fiscal health and long-term financial stability.
Support the artistic vision and direction of the PA as defined by the Artistic Director, Artistic Staff, and the Board of Directors.
Manage administrative staff and develop a program to recruit, coordinate and support the work of volunteers.
Participate in the PA’s schedule of activities and events during the week, evenings, and weekends.
Manage multiple concurrent programs, logistics and deadlines.
Areas of Responsibility:

Venues: Research and secure venues for auditions, rehearsals, concerts, and small ensemble performances.
Financial: Provide operational oversight for the bookkeeper to pay bills and make deposits; pay FICA, State withholding and sales tax, and file Form 941 and all other required tax forms; Coordinate annual audit; Create annual budget and report regularly to Board on attainment.
Development: Research, write, and manage grant proposals. Expand and cultivate the base of PA donors through the implementation of donor recognition programs and relationship building. Help create and execute annual fundraising.
Marketing: Work with Board committee members and contracted staff to create and execute a marketing plan, including advertising, publicity, website development, and social media presence.
Human Resources: Hire and manage staff as needed with available resources.
Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS
Personal knowledge of the culture of a professionally run performing arts organization.
Experience in a non-profit arts organization leadership position.
A passion for and knowledge of artistic endeavor.
Proven fundraising experience.
Successful experience managing and supervising staff and volunteers.
Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to make judgments and assume responsibility.
Effective and courteous interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; oral and written English fluency, including accuracy in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel, Video Conferencing, Google Drive and Powerpoint.
Ability and willingness to learn other programs used by the PA including SalesForce, Form Assembly, TeamUp Calendar, Wikispaces, Vertical Response email marketing, Adobe InDesign, EventBrite and Sign Up Genius. At least a minimal knowledge of HTML also preferred.
Strong research, analytical, and planning abilities, and superior attention to detail.

Must be able to support and implement the mission, vision, and values of the Philharmonic Association.
Knowledge of and interest in orchestral and jazz music is preferred.

Other Requirements:
Ability to travel and work outside traditional office hours.
Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
Acceptable background report.

The Organization: The Philharmonic Association (PA) was founded in 1988 by thirty-five high school musicians from North Carolina’s Triangle area. They invited Hugh Partridge, Principal Violist of the North Carolina Symphony, to be their conductor and to help them organize their orchestra. Today, the Philharmonic Association has grown to a multi-level youth music education organization currently sponsoring six orchestras, four jazz ensembles, and three chamber groups that serve over five hundred musicians through year-round programming with an annual operating budget of over $300,000. Our organization seeks to provide both beginning ensemble training in supportive non-competitive environments, as well as top-level groups that inspire serious young musicians selected through a rigorous audition process. The PA has expanded in response to community need, having added groups to accommodate the abundance of musicians wishing to participate, to supplement offerings in local schools, and to increase diversity in our membership.

Over our history, the PA has enjoyed the support of the North Carolina Symphony’s artistic staff. Our young musicians of the PA have been privileged to perform under the direction of many of the conductors of the North Carolina Symphony, and have annual opportunities to work with numerous members of the Symphony
as coaches and adjudicators. Since 1993 the Triangle Youth Philharmonic has been the official youth orchestra of the North Carolina Symphony.

The PA was presented with the 2011 Business Support of the Arts Award in the Arts Education category by the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce and the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County. Thanks to numerous positive reviews written by participants, parents, and music professionals, the PA made the Top-Rated Arts Nonprofits list in 2011 and 2014 on the Great Nonprofits website. The PA was extremely honored to be recognized by the City of Raleigh, North Carolina Arts Commission, as a 2012 recipient of the Medal of Arts.
