Thirteen Philharmonic Association Art Invitational
The Philharmonic Association, Inc., is pleased to invite high school visual art students to submit entries for the 2020 – 2021 concert program cover. We sponsor eight ensembles comprised of talented young musicians, fourth through twelfth grades, who perform great classical and jazz music: Triangle Youth Philharmonic, Triangle Youth Symphony, Triangle Youth Orchestra, Triangle Youth String Orchestra, Triangle Youth String Sinfonia, Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble, Triangle Youth Jazz Orchestra and Triangle Youth Jazz Band.
A committee comprised of art professionals, community leaders, and representatives of the Philharmonic Association will judge the entries. The top four entries will be exhibited in the lobbies of Cary Arts Center and Meymandi Concert Hall at the Philharmonic Association’s fall concerts.
Media: Any two dimensional media suitable for replication as a program cover. A vertical aspect is preferred. The artwork does not have to be rendered as realistic. It may be surreal or abstract. The question could be asked, “What is your impression of classical or jazz music?”, or the art could be inspired by listening to a classical or jazz piece.
Maximum size: 18” x 24” Vertical (Portrait)
Qualifications: Any high school visual art student in Wake County
- First place————-$100
- Second place———-$75
- Third place————$50
- Honorable Mention–$25
Deadline for entry submission: October 12, 2020
Procedure for submission of entry:
Complete the entry form and upload a snapshot of the artwork, it’s that easy.
Set your camera or phone so that your image would be a maximum of 5 megabytes. (for dummies)
Outdoors on an overcast day is best – the light is even and there are no shadows.
Prop the artwork on a bench or tape to a wall so you don’t have to bend over and cast a shadow on the artwork.
When taking the picture be aware that you are not cutting off any area and that there is no keystoning (that the top and sides are even in size – oh, and if you see your shadow don’t take the picture)
Prize-winners will be invited to the Philharmonic Association concerts in November where their artwork will be displayed in the lobbies of Cary Arts Center and Meymandi Concert Hall. Each prize-winner will be offered two complimentary tickets to the concert of their choice. Artwork will be returned in December. The Philharmonic Association retains the right to exhibit past program covers.
