Both our Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble and Triangle Youth Jazz Orchestra participated in this year’s Regional Essentially Ellington Festival at UNC Chapel Hill.  We are proud that both of our participating groups received awards at this competition.  The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble won the award for Outstanding Overall Band  while our Triangle Youth Jazz Orchestra won, for the first time, the award for Outstanding Community Band.

For the Triangle Youth Jazz Orchestra, to win such a competitive award is an exceptional accomplishment for the ensemble and the Philharmonic Association as a whole.  Awards are only given to three of the many bands that participate in the festival, so TYJO’s accomplishment is certainly worthy of applause.

TYJO Director Lisa Burn defines this recognition as “confirmation of TYJO’s jazz language and ensemble ability.”  She describes it as “rewarding to see the students recognized for both their level of playing and work ethic” and concludes that “this is an outstanding accomplishment for all students involved and for the growth of the Triangle Youth Jazz program!”

Lisa Burn and all Philharmonic Association staff are proud of the members of the Triangle Youth Jazz Orchestra for their hard work and success.  We look forward to seeing the members continue to grow as musicians.
