Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble

The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble is now based in Raleigh under the direction of Dr. Gregg Gelb. TYJE is for advanced musicians in grades 8 - 12 who want to develop the skills to perform a wide range of jazz compositions. Membership is by audition in late summer. The ensemble will provide the opportunity for members to study and perform the best of big band jazz in a professional setting. TYJE will have a variety of performance opportunities and participates in the Essentially Ellington program from Jazz at Lincoln Center. TYJE has earned the Outstanding Community Band Award five years in a row since 2012 at The Carolina Jazz Festival, North Carolina Regional Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Festival at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This year, TYJE was selected to go to the finals in New York City in the national competition Jazz at Lincoln Center Essentially Ellington Festival and earned second place (out of an original field of 92 ensembles.). They are the first and only group from North Carolina selected for this honor.

Dr. Gregg Gelb is a recipient of a Jazz Composers Award from the North Carolina Arts Council and fourRegional Artist grants from the Fayetteville/Cumberland County Arts Council. In addition to leading his Jazz Quartet, 8-piece Swing Band, La Fiesta Latin Jazz Band and the 2nd Line Stompers, he is founder and director of the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Society, and co-founder and player with the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra. He is an adjunct professor at Central Carolina Community College, Fayetteville St. University, and St. Augustine's University. He has been an Interim Assistant Professor of Jazz at Francis Marion University, UNC Greensboro, NC State and UNC Chapel Hill, taught band in Wake County and was a Visiting Artist in the North Carolina Community Colleges. He has a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Berklee College of Music, a Master of Music degree from the UNC School of the Arts, and a DMA from UNC Greensboro.
